[Press release of TU Dresden, 6 Mar 2024]

Prof. Gerhard P. Fettweis, holder of the Vodafone Endowed Professorship for Mobile Communication Systems at TU Dresden, has been elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), Class of 2024. Election to the NAE in the US is one of the highest professional honors an engineer can receive. NAE members are among the most knowledgeable engineering experts in the country and have distinguished themselves in business and in academic management, in technical positions, as university professors, and as leaders in government and private engineering organizations. Prof. Fettweis is being recognized in particular for his innovations in wireless networking and entrepreneurship. This year, the prestigious honor has only been bestowed on one representative of a German university.

"I feel deeply honored to receive this great recognition of our work from my mother's home country (USA), which of course would not have been possible without the support of my entire team at TU Dresden over the past 30 years," Prof. Fettweis emphasizes.

Membership of the National Academy of Engineering honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice or education, including significant contributions to engineering literature. They have often been pioneers in new and evolving fields of technology, have contributed to significant advances in traditional areas of engineering, or helped develop or implement innovative approaches to engineering education. The election of the new NAE members is the culmination of a year-long process.

The newly elected members will be formally inducted during the NAE Annual Meeting on September 29, 2024. The list of new and international members, with their primary affiliations at the time of election and a brief description of their major accomplishments in engineering, can be viewed here: https://www.nae.edu/312025/NAENewClass2024
