It’s not always about science – in this spirit we are launching our new interview series “10 (Beyond) Science Facts.” We will be interviewing our Principal Investigators, investigators as well as Research Group Leaders and asking them ten sometimes unexpected and personal questions... Do you think that our researchers have always been pursuing the career path of a scientist? Are you sure that you know your group leader well? Would you like to get helpful career advice from someone with a great deal of experience? In the weeks ahead, we are thus presenting a small series of these Q&A’s so you can get to know our scientists better. Stay tuned!

With the first Q&A episode, we would like to introduce our Principal Investigator, Prof. Brigitte Voit to you. Enjoy reading!

  1. Pretend you are the Federal Minister of Research: What would your first action be?
Increase research funds for also more fundamental research and reduce administration and restrictions.

  2. What was your most surprising research discovery so far?
I am still very proud that my results from my PhD work resulted in a technical photo resin used by Agfa Gevaert. That motivated all my future work, not only looking for new polymeric materials but also to make them work in application. And surprises are in any research results.

  3. What makes a perfect day at work for you?
Getting my own work accepted in a high-ranking journal.

  4. What makes Dresden the perfect city to work and live in?
A beautiful, not too big city with great cultural activities; everything what you need is not far.

  5. What did you want to be when you grew up?
That varied from building engineer to medical doctor and finally I ended up as a chemist.

  6. Do you have any role model?
Not really; I had an excellent academic mentor, but still developed my own way.

  7. What was the best career advice you've been given?
Only go into an academic career if you deeply love research and challenges and do not mind hard work.

  8. What is on top of your bucket list?
    Seems to vary every day.

  9. List three things only few people know about you.
I live in two great places, Dresden and Munich. I like windsurfing, best in Hawaii, and reading novels.

  10. What's next?
    Succeeding in the excellence initiative.
