Prof. Gerhard Fettweis Elected as a Member of the DFG Senate

The General Assembly of the German Research Foundation (DFG) elected Prof. Gerhard Fettweis and eleven other new members to the Senate of the largest research funding organisation and central self-governing scientific institution in Germany at its annual General Meeting in Rostock.
Gerhard Fettweis, who has held the Vodafone Endowed Chair for Mobile Communication Systems at Dresden University of Technology since 1994 and is the coordinator of cfaed and one of the coordinators of the 5G Lab Germany, occupies the DFG Senate's position in the field of electrical engineering and information technology. The Senate is the central scientific body which discusses and decides all important DFG matters.
The Senate deliberates and decides on all matters of fundamental importance to the DFG within the framework of the principles adopted by the General Assembly, insofar as they are not reserved for the Joint Committee. The Joint Committee is thus responsible for all major decisions concerning research funding prior to the specific funding decision and for all major decisions regarding the review, evaluation and decision-making procedure. The Senate also decides which Review Boards are to be formed and how they are structured.
A total of 39 members belong to the Senate. Of these, 36 are elected by the General Assembly; they are also the scientific members of the Main Committee. In addition, the Presidents of the German Rectors' Conference, the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities and the Max Planck Society are members of the Senate by virtue of their office. The Presidents of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft as well as the Chairperson of the Science Council are permanent guests of the Senate.
Gerhard Fettweis has been Professor of Communications Engineering at the TU Dresden since 1994. Since 2012, he has coordinated the Cluster of Excellence Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed) and the DFG Collaborative Research Center "Highly Adaptive Energy Efficient Computing (HAEC)" for the TU Dresden. In 2014, he also initiated the "5G Lab Germany" at the TU Dresden, where TUD scientists in electrical engineering and computer science work on the further development of mobile communications. Gerhard Fettweis is a member of Leopoldina, a long-time IEEE Fellow, a member of acatech, has an honorary doctorate from TU Tampere in Finland, and has received numerous other honors and awards.

Prof. Gerhard Fettweis neu gewähltes Mitglied im Senat der DFG
Die Mitgliederversammlung der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) wählte jetzt auf ihrer Sitzung im Rahmen der DFG-Jahresversammlung in Rostock Prof. Gerhard Fettweis und elf weitere neue Mitglieder in den Senat der größten Forschungsförderorganisation und zentralen Selbstverwaltungseinrichtung der Wissenschaft in Deutschland.
Gerhard Fettweis, seit 1994 Inhaber der Vodafone Stiftungsprofessur für Mobile Nachrichtensysteme an der TU Dresden und u. a. einer der Koordinatoren des 5G Lab Germany, nimmt im DFG-Senat den Platz für den Bereich Elektro- und Informationstechnik ein. Der Senat ist das zentrale wissenschaftliche Gremium, in dem über alle Angelegenheiten der DFG von wesentlicher Bedeutung beraten und beschlossen wird.
Der Senat berät und beschließt im Rahmen der von der Mitgliederversammlung beschlossenen Grundsätze über alle Angelegenheiten der DFG von wesentlicher Bedeutung, soweit sie nicht dem Hauptausschuss vorbehalten sind. Er ist damit zuständig für alle wesentlichen Entscheidungen in der Forschungsförderung im Vorfeld der konkreten Förderentscheidung sowie für alle wesentlichen Entscheidungen zur Gestaltung des Begutachtungs-, Bewertungs- und Entscheidungsverfahrens. Der Senat beschließt zudem, welche Fachkollegien zu bilden sind und wie sie sich gliedern.
Insgesamt gehören dem Senat 39 Mitglieder an. Von ihnen werden 36 von der Mitgliederversammlung gewählt; sie sind zugleich auch die wissenschaftlichen Mitglieder des Hauptausschusses. Darüber hinaus gehören die Präsidenten der Hochschulrektorenkonferenz, der Union der deutschen Akademien der Wissenschaften und der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft dem Senat kraft ihres Amtes an. Die Präsidenten der Hermann von Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren und der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft sowie die Vorsitzende des Wissenschaftsrates sind ständige Gäste des Senats.
Gerhard Fettweis ist seit 1994 Professor für Nachrichtentechnik an der TU Dresden. Er koordiniert für die TU Dresden seit 2012 das Exzellenzcluster Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed) sowie den DFG-Sonderforschungsbereich "Highly Adaptive Energy Efficient Computing (HAEC)". Zudem hat er 2014 das "5G Lab Germany" der TU Dresden initiiert, bei dem sich TUD-Wissenschaftler der Elektrotechnik und Informatik mit der Weiterentwicklung des Mobilfunks beschäftigen. Gerhard Fettweis ist Mitglied der Leopoldina, langjähriger IEEE Fellow, Mitglied von acatech, hat einen Ehrendoktor von der TU Tampere in Finnland und bekam bereits zahlreiche weitere Ehrungen und Preise.
