From 4 July until 3 October 2016, the unique research alliance DRESDEN-concept (DDc) presents an open-air science exhibition in the heart of the Dresden's old town. Right beside the world renowned Church of our Ladies (Frauenkirche), in the middle of the Neumarkt square, Dresdeners and visitors have the chance to learn more about the variety and excellence of the local research landscape. The exhibition aims to inspire the audience with scientific highlights. It is structured into the four fields of scientific competence which were identified in the course of the application process within the German Initiative of Excellence. cfaed and the 5G Lab Germany contributed the contents of the area "Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Microelectronics".
Videos, interactive elements for all age groups and info boards in German and English provide an overview of the latest research results of the DDc partners. Around the clock, in any weather and free of charge!
Dresden's mayor Dirk Hilbert, TU Dresden’s rector Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen, and numerous directors of the DDc partner institutes will officially open and visit the exhibition on 7th July at 10.30am. The exhibition can be visited already starting 5 July.
On 1 July 2016, Dr. Markus Krötzsch commenced his position as Chair of Knowledge-Based Systems at the Cluster of Excellence cfaed / TU Dresden. This Chair is the first of cfaed’s Open Topic Professorships, which are intended to keep rising stars in Dresden or to win international talents. Krötzsch had received attractive offers from all over the world but accepted the offer of TU Dresden and cfaed to stay at the Faculty of Computer Science which he joined in 2013 as Emmy Noether research group leader. His expertise and excellence is already internationally recognized, proven recently by having been awarded the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz-Prize for young scientists by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Congratulations to our Principal Investigator Prof. Frank Ellinger for being awarded the Vodafone Innovation Award 2016! The award ceremony was held yesterday in Düsseldorf. The electrical engineering scientist received the prize honoring his groundbreaking discoveries in the field of high-frequency circuits. Frank Ellinger's innovations allow faster, more energy efficient and cheaper chips for the mobile and landline communications. Frank Ellinger is Principal Investigator of cfaed and has been leading the Carbon Research Path from 2012 until 2014. He is initiator and coordinator of major collaborative research projects like "FFlexCom", "addapt" and "FAST" as well. Ellinger is one of the world's leading experts in the field of circuit technology. For the last 15 years, his team is setting world records priodically.

Die "Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften 2016" hat beim cfaed alle bisherigen Marken der Besucherzahlen deutlich übertroffen. Besonders in den ersten vier Stunden herrschte großer Andrang. Die Sitzplätze im Hörsaal reichten bei den beiden Vorträgen über DNA als Bauteil für elektronische Schaltkreise und über Datenverarbeitung mittels Chemikalien nicht aus. Auch bei der cfaed-Technologieplattform Dresden Center for Nanoanalysis (DCN), wo unterschiedlichste Experimente mit Mikroskopen und Elektronenmikroskopen durchgeführt werden konnten, waren die Labors oft am Rande ihrer Aufnahmekapazität. Am Begrüßungsstand, wo kleine Experimente nicht nur für Kinder vorbereitet waren, wurden im Laufe des Abends rund 400 Becher mit Cocktails ausgegeben, die auf Basis der 'Molekularküche' entstanden waren - siehe Screenshot von der Facebook-Seite der "Langen Nacht".
